SeriousEnergy Manager With Cisco Network Building Mediator
The Challenge
Facilities and energy managers are faced with unprecedented challenges to contain energy costs. Volatile energy prices and tariff schedules, coupled with only coarse visibility into consumption patterns limit the identification of efficiency opportunities and management of the energy budget. Furthermore, managers struggle to report on and forecast usage to internal departments, impacting financial reporting and blocking progress on sustainability goals.Traditional building automation systems themselves do not solve the issue. There is little to no interoperability of these systems or use of true open standards to allow for easier aggregation of the data. Collection and analysis are costly, time consuming, and often inadequate in detail.
The Solution
The SeriousEnergy Manager and Cisco Mediator combined, has the ability to monitor, analyze, control and optimize (MonACO) energy demand across systems that previously had different management interfaces and no mechanism to share data. The Mediator collects data from building controls systems and energy demand systems in real time. It then normalizes the data into a common data XML interface. This enables the Mediator to perform protocol translation and communicate the device information over the Internet using TCP/IP. With this network-based platform the SeriousEnergy Manager can communicate to different devices, including thermostats, HVAC units, lighting and IT equipment. A web-services API provides remote access for smart phone applications.
